Troup County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office is investigating their first homicide of the year in Troup County which left one woman killed and a suicidal subject in custody.

The investigation began on January 30th, 2022 around 3:13PM when deputies were alerted of a mental health crisis at 39 Drake Road in LaGrange.

“Information received was that the subject had killed his girlfriend and he was going to kill himself,” the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities arrived on scene and made contact with 37-year-old Jay Davis Gamel, who was covered in blood, and detain3: him. Gamel had minor injuries to his body and was transported to the Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.

Deputies continued to search the house where they found a deceased female who had suffered fatal injuries to her head. The victim was identified as 47-year-old Tracy Shepard. Shepard is from the city of Lanett, Alabama.

Gamel is in custody and has been charged with one count of Murder, authorities confirmed.
