Robbery, shots fired at Phenix City Walmart leads to chase, manhunt in Lee County

A robbery and shooting investigation in Phenix City led to late night chase and manhunt in Lee County.

The investigation began when Phenix City police officers were dispatched to Walmart, which is in the 3700 block of US Highway 280/431 North, on April 24, 2022 at 9:24 pm, in reference to a robbery and shots fired.

Police, once they arrived on scene, confirmed no one was injured and the offenders had already fled the scene in a Silver 2015 Kia Optima. The department issued a “Be on the lookout” for the vehicle.

Lee County sheriff’s deputies patrolling near Bleeker Junction on US Highway 280/431 when they made contact with vehicle leading to a high speed chase. The chase, involving two offenders from Montgomery, Alabama identified as Shemekia Brooks and Deuante Levon Richardson, ended in an accident at 2542 Wrights Mill Road. Brooks was caught by officers and reportedly need medical attention by medics. Brooks was arrested for Robbery First Degree and is currently in police custody.

Richardson fled the scene of the wreck heading northwest on foot near Chewacla State Park. A manhunt was then put in place involving Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Auburn Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and Opelika Police. Lee County Emergency Management Agency sent out a public safety alert for the area as K9’s were on the ground and a helicopter was in the area.

Richardson currently has two outstanding warrants for his arrest for Robbery First Degree and Carrying a Pistol without a License. Richardson was last seen on foot in the Chewacla State Park area wearing a blue jumpsuit.
