Unoccupied, newly built Columbus apartment building burns down

Columbus firefighters and medics were busy Saturday afternoon after an unoccupied, newly-built apartment building burned to the ground.

Battalion 2, Engines 2, 3, 8, and 11, Ladder 8 and 12, Medic 3, Squad 11, and Car 66 were all dispatched to the fire and were spotted on scene.

The building was located in the 2100 block of Old Guard Road where Greystone Pointe Apartments is built, just near Northside High School.

News 2 viewer, Rob Olinger, told us he was helping direct traffic since a car almost hit a fire fighter. Olinger says a woman also cussed him out due to him directing traffic and added, “might want to remind people if they see a citizen/resident helping, at the behest of a municipal entity, they should be a tad kinder. Not all of us are bad guys looking to hurt someone.”

The smoke plum from the massive fire was seen for miles, including some seeing it from Uptown Columbus.

Fire crews are still on scene extinguishing the fire with water.

It is unknown what led up to the massive blaze but authorities will continue to investigate.
