16-year-old arrested in August homicide at Columbus apartment complex

A 16-year-old teen is facing charges in connection to an August homicide, which caused a fire to a Columbus apartment complex.

The investigation started when at 9:54 P.M. on August 13, 2022, authorities responded to Village Square apartments, located at 1441 Boxwood Boulevard for reports of shots fired and a truck crashed into an apartment. Both — the truck and the apartment — were on fire with the man trapped inside the truck.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan was called to the scene at 10:30 P.M. and pronounced the man deceased at 10:45 P.M. The man was later identified as 44-year-old Jerry Walton.

Twelve days later, on Thursday, August 25, 2022, the Columbus Police Department issued a murder arrest warrant for a juvenile suspect “in that he did unlawfully and with malice aforethought, cause the death of Jerry Lewis Walton Jr., by discharging a firearm into his person,” Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman said.

Close to a month later after the arrest warrant was issued, on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office Drug, Gang, and Fugitive Task Force, in coordination with the United States Marshal Services, arrested the juvenile murder suspect in Muscogee County. The juvenile suspect had a firearm.

The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office released custody of the juvenile suspect and firearm to the Columbus Police Department.

A 17-year-old male was with the juvenile murder suspect who was arrested yesterday, September 21, 2022. The 17-year-old was subsequently charged with Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of a Handgun by a Person Under the Age of 18 years. The 17-year-old was in Possession of an AR Pistol and 4.1 grams of Marijuana. Deputies arrested the 17-year-old and transported him to the Muscogee County Jail.
