A homicide investigation is underway by detectives Friday night after a man was fatally injured in a shooting on the east side of Columbus.

Columbus police officers and Columbus Fire and EMS, along with Community Ambulance, responded to the 6100 block of Georgetown Drive where a gunshot wound victim was located. The victim was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional.

The victim, later identified as 20-year-old Steven Daniel, was shot multiple times and pronounced deceased by an emergency room physician at 6:23 P.M., according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan. The family was notified and an autopsy is scheduled.

The shooting occurred near the entrance of East Columbus Magnet Academy, which still had kids on campus for extracurricular activities. No kids were physically injured when gunfire erupted several hundred feet away from them.

This is the 33rd homicide for the city of Columbus, and the sixth homicide this month.
