Opelika police traffic stop leads to man charged with illegal drug and gun charges

A weekend traffic stop in Opelika led to a man facing illegal drug and gun charges, and police are asking if you have any information to contact authorities

Opelika Police conducted a traffic stop at S. Uniroyal Road near Winding Oak Drive in reference to a traffic violation on January 26, 2023.

During the traffic stop, one of the department’s canines alerted to the odor narcotics inside the vehicle. After searching the vehicle, officers arrested 56-year-old William Derek Smith of Auburn, AL, for Drug Trafficking (Methamphetamine), Possession of a Pistol by a Violent Felon, Possession of Marijuana, Second Degree, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
