A Columbus man is dead after shooting at investigators, who returned fire, at a north Columbus hotel.
Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman confirmed on the scene that his special operations unit was notified of a wanted individual who had taken weapons from another law enforcement officer. The sheriff’s office tracked down the individual to the Baymont Inn and Suites.
“When authorities were getting ready to approach the room, the wanted subject inside the room fired multiple shots at investigators. Investigators returned fire,” Sheriff Countryman said.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the subject as 22-year-old Oscar Maxwell. Maxwell suffered multiple gunshot wounds, which led to him being pronounced dead on the scene at 10:59 P.M. by Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Dustin Harrelson.
No investigators were injured. Georgia Bureau of Investigations is being called in to investigate due to it being a deputy-involved shooting.
