Man shot by CPD officers after backfiring of car sounds like gunshots during traffic stop

A Phenix City man is recovering after being shot by Columbus police officers during a traffic stop on Manchester Expressway. GBI agents have released new details into the shooting.

Georgia Bureau of Investigations say Columbus Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop on Manchester Expressway on a car traveling about 100 MPH in a construction zone around 8:05 A.M. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. The driver of the car, which was a BMW, was later identified as 26-year-old Jermaine Hernandez, of Phenix City, Alabama.

“During the traffic stop, Hernandez’s car reportedly backfired, causing a loud noise that sounded like gunfire,” GBI said. The officers then shot at Hernandez multiple times. Hernandez was hit one time.

Officers and EMS personnel provided first aid on the scene, and EMS personnel took Hernandez to a local hospital for treatment.
