2 dead, several injured after Alabama Dept. of Corrections van crashes in Tallapoosa County

A single-vehicle crash, which involved an inmate transport van, in Tallapoosa County has left two dead and others injured.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 on Elder Road near Duck Road, approximately two miles northeast of Jackson’s Gap, in the county. 

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says 60-year-old Willie Crayton Jr., of Alexander City was fatally injured when the 2014 Ford Econoline van, he was a passenger in, left the roadway and struck a tree. Crayton was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

66-year-old Bruce L. Clements, of Alexander City, who was also a passenger in the van, was critically injured and transported to Russell Medical Center in Alexander City for treatment. Clements later succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. 

The driver of the van, 46-year-old Jake L. Jones, of Alexander City, was also injured and transported to Russell Medical Center for treatment.

The following individuals were also injured during the course of the crash and were transported to Russell Medical Center: Richard Jackson, 58, Shawn Wasden, 33, Heath Garrett, 50, and Thomas Bass, 44, all of Alexander City. 

“The Ford Econoline van was used by the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) for inmate transportation,” the agency said. Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.
