Homicide investigation underway at Rutledge State Prison in Columbus

A homicide investigation is underway at Rutledge State Prison in Columbus, according to Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan.

Bryan confirmed an inmate was found dead in his cell that he shared with another inmate midday Sunday at Jack Rutledge State Prison.

58-year-old Leon Habson was pronounced dead at 12:39 P.M. on the scene after being assaulted by his roommate.

“Manner of death is currently undetermined as an autopsy will be conducted by The GBI medical examiner in Decatur,” Bryan added. “Photographs and evidence collected at the scene confirms this is a homicide.”

The investigation remains ongoing by the Georgia Department of Corrections, and other officials. This is the fourth homicide so far this holiday weekend.
