Phenix City sees three homicides in less than 9 hours

Phenix City police are investigating three homicides – all which occurred in the span of 9 hours of each other.

The first homicide occurred in the parking lot of Dollar General located at 109 Seale Road during the evening hours of January 17, 2025. Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. confirmed 28-year-old Matthew James Brooks was pronounced dead on scene at 9:50 P.M.

CNAW2News.com crews spotted a large crowd around the scene of incident, along with investigators and other law enforcement.

The second homicide occurred at 1014 North Railroad Street around 4 A.M. on January 18, 2025. Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. confirmed 39-year-old Travis Oakley was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds at 4:03 A.M. at Piedmont Columbus Regional.

The shooting occurred during an altercation at the North Railroad Street location. Oakley’s girlfriend, 47-year-old Latasha Williamson, was also shot and was in the Intensive Care Unit at Piedmont Columbus Regional. Later on Saturday, at 11:04 A.M., Williamson was pronounced deceased.

All three victims will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery for an autopsy.
