A Lee County man has been indicted in the death of another inmate at the Lee County Detention Center.
The investigation into the death began after Shawn Dewon Callaway, 39, from Auburn, was found deceased inside of his cell on July 20th, 2024, at approximately 4:54 AM.
“Russell County Sheriff’s investigators responded to investigate the death,” investigators said. “To ensure impartiality, it is standard procedure for the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to request an independent agency conduct any in -custody death of a Lee County inmate.”
The inmate’s body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy which later revealed that he died from asphyxia due to neck compression.
“During the investigation, Russell County Investigators discovered evidence that indicated Callaway’s roommate was involved in the death,” investigators added.

26-year-old Jimmy Jenkins Jr., from Tuskegee, was indicted by a Lee County Grand Jury on February 27, 2025, with the charge of intentional murder.
Russell County Sheriff’s Investigators served Jenkins with the murder indictment at the Lee County Jail on March 10, 2025, and he is being held without bond.
