Driver identified after leading agencies on chase in East Alabama

A 54-year-old woman was identified as the driver behind the wheel of a chase across multiple East Alabama counties.

The chase began in Tallapoosa County heading eastbound on U.S. Highway 280, where it entered Lee County and Opelika jurisdiction. The chase involved Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and Opelika Police Department.

Eventually, the chase, which lasted nearly an hour, ended on Interstate 85 near Mile Marker 57 in Auburn.

The driver, identified as Amanda Wingo Bento, was taken into custody and charged with attempting to elude a police officer.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed no injuries were reported to persons involved or no damage occurred to vehicles.

It is unclear what led to the chase to being initiated.
