A Lanett man, who was wanted for firing into an occupied patrol car, died in an officer-involved shooting.
Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched a probe into the fatal officer-involved shooting.
According to ALEA, the incident unfolded when officers from the Lanett Police Department, along with an Auburn Police Department officer assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force, attempted to take 27-year-old Jaja Davis Jr. of Lanett into custody. Davis was wanted on a charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle after he allegedly firing into a Lanett Police Department patrol car.
Officers encountered Davis a second time in the 1000 block of Magnolia Drive in Lanett. During the attempted arrest, investigators say Davis exchanged gunfire with officers. He was struck during the shooting and later pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. No officers were injured.
ALEA officials say the investigation remains ongoing. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the Chambers County District Attorney’s Office for review.
