Firefighters responded to a structure fire at a two-story, multi-family apartment building at 700 Avenue E on Jan. 12, 2026, at approximately 5:17 p.m. after reports of heavy smoke and visible flames.

West Point Fire Department crews, assisted by Troup County and Lanett fire departments, found heavy fire conditions in a second-floor apartment. The fire spread into the attic and roof, causing a partial roof collapse and prompting a temporary switch to defensive firefighting operations using aerial ladders.

Once conditions improved, crews reentered the building and extinguished the remaining fire. The blaze was brought under control without injuries to residents or firefighters.
The fire caused a total loss of contents to the second floor and displaced multiple families. The scene was secured by West Point Police overnight and later released to the property owner.
