Man arrested after two people hit by car in Smiths Station; video footage shows incident

A Lee County man is in jail tonight after hitting two young men with a vehicle in Smiths Station.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. central standard time on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the 9200 block of Lee Road 240.

In the video footage obtained by CNAW2News.com, a silver Chrysler 300 traveling eastbound behind a pickup truck, entered the westbound lane travel, and struck the two people walking alongside the road. The Chrysler 300 is seen reversing, as one of the victims attempts to stop the driver, and the Chrysler is seen taking off toward Phenix City.

The two people were injured, with one victim being transported to a nearby hospital and the other refusing medical treatment.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Phenix City Police Department, and Russell County Sheriff’s Office ended up locating the driver and the Chrysler at 616 13th Street in downtown Phenix City.

The driver, identified as James Gabberd, was arrested and booked into the Lee County Jail. Gabberd is charged with two counts of failure to appear on theft of property third degree, one count of leaving the scene of an accident, one count of driving while suspended, one count of improper pass on the right, and one count of driving under the influence-controlled substance.

Gabberd was given a bond of $13,300.
