An investigation is now underway into a Sunday fire in Phenix City.

Numerous Phenix City Fire and Rescue units vehicles and firefighters, along with Phenix City Police Department and CARE Ambulance responded to 4001 16th Avenue, near Summerville Road and 40th Street, around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026. The fire fully involved a two-story, garage section that is connected by a pathway to the main home.

According to an occupant, who did not want to be identified or interviewed, they heard three loud booms and then saw the smoke, which led to the large first responder presence.

As our crews were on scene, flames and smoke billowed out of the residence, leading to ashes flowing through the night sky. The ashes led to a power pole and two nearby trees catching on fire.

Firefighters using hoses, axes, water from nearby hydrants and the platform ladder truck, and other equipment led to the fire being contained and extinguished around 5 a.m.

Due to the temperatures of 20-degrees and below, water that was used to extinguish the blaze led to icicles and ice forming on the burned structure, nearby trees, and the roadway. Crews used sand for parts of the roadway on Summerville Road, 40th Street, 16th Avenue, and 43rd Street.

CNAW2News.com crews went back to the residence around 3:40 p.m. We spotted a metal beam that had bent due to the heat and the second story completely collapsed into the empty three-door garage. A nearby trash can and fences appeared to also be melted and burned.

A fire marshal and investigators were spotted on scene investigating the blaze. At this time, no cause has been determined. Thankfully, no injuries were reported to firefighters or occupants.

This is the ninth fire in Phenix City-Russell County since Friday afternoon. The investigation is continuing and stay with CNAW2News.com as we work to learn more.
