Columbus police investigating after incident involving “alleged police impersonator”

Columbus police are investigating after an incident involving an “alleged police impersonator”.

The incident occurred in broad daylight around 2:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, near the exit ramp from JR Allen Parkway onto Schomburg Road in the northend of the city.

According to the victim’s family member, a solid black charger, potentially a decommissioned police cruiser with no stickers, pulled over the victim and robbed the victim at gunpoint.

On Wednesday, following social media posts from citizens and a report by CNAW2News.com, Columbus police issued a statement on social media.

In the statement, police confirmed they were aware of “rumors and unverified information” regarding the incident and aware of only one reported incident.

“When there is an immediate public safety concern or a confirmed pattern of activity, CPD will notify the community,” the department said. “We encourage the public to rely on official CPD channels for accurate information, as speculation can create unnecessary concern and interfere with active investigations.”

The Columbus Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police.
