An Auburn woman is facing a felony charge following an investigation into an injured canine reported late last month.
According to the Auburn Police Department, officers were called on March 23, 2026, to an apartment in the 200 block of West Longleaf Drive regarding an injured dog and an intoxicated individual.
When officers arrived, they located the injured canine along with its owner, identified as 22-year-old Karina Lynn Higgins of Auburn. Higgins was arrested at the scene for public intoxication and transported to East Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

The dog was taken to the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine, where it received treatment for its injuries. After being treated, the animal was released and placed into protective custody with City of Auburn Animal Control.
Following an investigation into the incident, authorities obtained a warrant charging Higgins with aggravated cruelty to animals.
On April 6, 2026, Higgins was arrested on that charge and booked into the Lee County Jail. She is being held on a $5,000 bond.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Auburn Police Department at (334) 501-3100. Tips can also be submitted by calling or texting (334) 246-1391 or by emailing police@auburnalabama.org.
