New details have been released following a use-of-force incident inside the Lee County Jail that gained public attention after surveillance video surfaced online.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirmed that the incident was placed under investigation immediately after it occurred, which is standard protocol for any use-of-force situation within the facility. According to Jones, that internal review has since been completed.
As a result of the findings, staff members involved in the incident faced disciplinary measures. The sheriff said those actions specifically addressed concerns about the demeanor of certain individuals seen in the video.
A separate, ongoing investigation is now focused on the unauthorized release of information during an investigation. Authorities say the leak may constitute a criminal violation related to the improper disclosure of information tied to an active investigation.
The original incident came to light on Sunday, May 3, 2026, when a video posted to Facebook appeared to show an unidentified inmate being tased by a deputy after approaching a cell window where another inmate was located.
In the footage, two female correctional deputies can be seen laughing and walking out of view shortly after the use of force, while a male deputy appears to assist with the situation.
Sheriff Jones previously stated that all use-of-force incidents are reviewed to determine whether the actions taken were appropriate and in line with established policies.
“Video evidence is just one element of the investigation, which has numerous elements involved,” Jones said in an earlier statement.
He emphasized that the sheriff’s office does not tolerate mistreatment of individuals in custody and that any violations of policy are addressed following a thorough review.
The sheriff’s office has not released the names of the deputies involved. The investigation into the video leak remains active.
