A residential structure fire Sunday afternoon in Smiths Station was contained to the carport area, according to Smiths Station Fire Chief Blake Green.
Fire crews were notified of the fire at 3:12 p.m. at a single-story home on Lee Road 213 near Lee Road 482.
Medic 1 arrived at approximately 3:15 p.m. and confirmed an active structure fire. Engine 124 arrived three minutes later and deployed a single handline to the carport.
Chief Green said Engine 124 was staffed by one volunteer firefighter, who was able to quickly contain the fire to the carport area. Engines 101 and 121 then assisted crews with extinguishing remaining hot spots.
The fire was ultimately contained to the carport.
According to Green, the cause of the fire was determined to be discarded cooking materials in the backyard.
Salem Volunteer Fire Department responded for mutual aid with a tanker and two personnel. Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department was also requested for mutual aid but was canceled before arriving on scene.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters.
