Bicycle Columbus has received $82,502.50 from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to support initiatives aimed at improving bicycle and pedestrian safety throughout the community.
The grant will fund events distributing educational and safety materials, pedestrian and bicycle conditions audits, family-friendly group bicycle rides, and partnerships with community organizations working to make local streets safer.
“The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety continues to work with state and local agencies to develop innovative projects and campaigns that are designed to save lives and protect everyone traveling on Georgia’s roads and highways,” said Allen Poole, director of GOHS. “We remind all drivers that following the rules of the road not only helps saves your life but also helps to make sure others make it home safely to their families as well.”
Bicycle Columbus Executive Director Stacy Roberts said the organization and GOHS share a common goal of eliminating traffic fatalities.
“Bicycle Columbus and GOHS are committed to the same goal of zero traffic fatalities,” Roberts said. “By maintaining this partnership with GOHS, we will be able to continue working toward this goal by utilizing the Safe System Approach.”
The grant period runs from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.
Bicycle Columbus works to promote safe walking and bicycling for transportation and recreation while advocating for improved bicycle and pedestrian conditions in Columbus. The organization expanded its mission in 2024 to include pedestrian safety.
Founded in 2012, Bicycle Columbus operated entirely with volunteers until hiring its first executive director in July 2026. The organization hosts several community events each year, including free bicycle maintenance clinics and Ride with the Mayor.
With full-time staff now in place, Bicycle Columbus said it looks forward to expanding its programs and strengthening its impact across the community.
GOHS works to educate the public about safe driving behaviors and implement highway safety campaigns and programs designed to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities on Georgia roads.
