A homicide investigation remains ongoing after a man was shot and killed allegedly by an elderly homeowner at a Blanchard Place home in Columbus.

Columbus police and medics responded to the shooting scene in the 2900 block of Blanchard Place around 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 5, 2023.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan says the shooting victim, later identified as 56-year-old Timothy Carey, was pronounced dead at 6:24 P.M. on the scene.

Carey went to collect money supposedly owed by an elderly female when an argument occurred, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed in a phone call Monday. Carey allegedly threatened her with a knife, when she fired a gun and missed Carey. She fired again, and struck him in the back.

Bryan added Carey did have a history of drug abuse, stealing and Carey had allegedly been using his deceased brother’s identity for a long period of time.

The investigation is ongoing.
