4-week-old Columbus boy, who had bruises on entire body, passes away
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed a homicide investigation is underway after a newborn baby passed away.
A 4-week-old boy, identified as Kentrell Leonard, was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional and placed on life support on July 27th, 2022, and then transported to the intensive care unit at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Atlanta. Leonard was pronounced deceased at 2:10 P.M. on August 9th, 2022.
Leonard was transported via Muscogee County coroner officials to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations for an autopsy.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan says Leonard has brain injuries, including subdural hematomas over both cerebral convexities, multiple fractures, bruises on entire body, and 4 posterior rib fractures. The manner of death was labeled homicide and the cause of death is Global Hypoxic-Ischemic injury, which is when the entire brain has extensive damage.
The father, identified as 22-year-old Delonta Williams was charged on July 28, 2022 with aggravated assault and cruelty to children. But due to Leonard passing, Williams will be charged with 2nd degree murder and other charges.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told CNAW2NEWS.com, the baby’s mother went to Mississippi and left the baby with the Father on the day of July 26, 2022. “On the evening of the 27th she received a face time call from the Father and the grandmother, with the infant. During that face time call, the mother states that the father of deceased stated that the baby acted drunk, and that the deceased was observed to be in a seizing state,” Muscogee Co. Coroner Buddy Bryan added. “It was decided the baby should go to the emergency room for evaluation and treatment. According to records, it is indicated that upon arrival to the ER by Father, the deceased was described as being “gray” in color, and in respiratory distress.”
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan also sad the Williams did admit to inflicting injury on the baby and records indicates that the Williams could not get the baby to stop crying, therefore he shook the baby and threw him leading to the baby’s fatal injuries
