A multi-state, multi-agency effort to target dangerous drivers is underway, including roadblocks and patrols of streets in the Chattahoochee Valley region.
Courtesy: MCSO Sheriff Greg Countryman The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, along with Columbus Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies, is participating in the kickoff for Hands Across the Border.
The Georgia-wide initiative also includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
The purpose of Hands Across the Border is to get dangerous drivers off the road and reduce the number of DUI-related traffic deaths.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol is a factor in one out of every four traffic deaths in the state of Georgia,” Sheriff Greg Countryman said. “The number rises approximately 30% during Labor Day Weekend.”
You will see increased law enforcement presence during this time throughout the state.
Sheriff Countryman added, “We are proud to stand with each of our fellow law enforcement partners to keep our citizens safe on the road. Have a safe and happy upcoming holiday!”
The data from tonight’s patrols and roadblocks is unknown at this time, and once we do get information regarding the details of the initiative we will release it.
