Columbus State University names Debra Kennedy as new Chief of Police
Columbus State University has appointed Debra Kennedy as the new chief of its University Police Department. A 33-year veteran of the Columbus Police Department, Kennedy currently serves as assistant chief overseeing both the Patrol and Investigative Services Bureaus.
Kennedy is a two-time graduate of Columbus State, holding a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s in public administration. Her longstanding relationship with the university, along with her extensive training and leadership experience, made her a standout candidate, said CSU President Stuart Rayfield.
“Debra has an impeccable reputation in this community,” Rayfield said. “Our current officers were excited about the possibility of her taking command here, and I look forward to us all benefiting from her expertise and experience.”
Kennedy began her career in 1992 and has led divisions including juvenile justice, vice, narcotics, robbery, homicide, and special operations. Since 2020, she has directed the CPD’s Administrative and Support Services Bureaus, managing training, personnel, the 911 Call Center, and more.
“I am deeply honored to accept the position of chief of police at Columbus State University,” Kennedy said. “I’m excited to use my 33 years of law enforcement experience to provide a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff, and to foster new community policing initiatives.”
In addition to her CSU degrees, Kennedy is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command and has served as an adjunct instructor. She is also a member of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police with specialized training in areas such as narcotics investigations and high-risk warrant execution.
Kennedy will officially begin her new role on June 1.
