While stationed atop the slide stairs, a vigilant lifeguard spotted a middle-school aged child approximately 30–40 yards outside the pool deck who had collapsed and appeared unresponsive. Without hesitation, staff sprang into action, immediately calling 911 and initiating life-saving measures.
Following protocol, team members utilized an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to assess the child’s condition. Although no shock was advised by the device, staff administered CPR and chest compressions until emergency responders from the LaGrange Fire Department arrived. Thanks to the coordinated response and continued treatment, the child was safely transported to the hospital and is reportedly recovering without further incident.
On Tuesday, May 27, representatives from local public safety agencies gathered at the William J. Griggs Center for an After-Action Review (AAR) to debrief the incident and express gratitude to those involved. Agencies in attendance included Troup County EMA, Troup County Fire Department, Troup County E-911, Troup County Management, the LaGrange Police Department, AMR, and Troup County Parks and Recreation.
The review concluded that clear communication, the presence of effective medical equipment, and the staff’s ability to act swiftly and apply their training played critical roles in the positive outcome.
“Troup County extends its heartfelt appreciation to the lifeguards, staff, and first responders whose quick action and professionalism saved a life,” the County said in a statement. “We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.”
Officials say the incident underscores the importance of rigorous training, preparedness, and inter-agency cooperation, and serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role local first responders and recreation staff play every day.
