Teenage female passes away following Opelika shooting Saturday night
A deadly shooting near an Opelika park is under investigation this weekend.
The shooting occurred around 8:40 P.M. on Saturday, June 7, 2025, in the area of the George C. Bandy Park along Jeter Avenue, where Opelika Alumni Day was held.
Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton confirmed a 16-year-old female, identified as Jamiyah Grant, was transported by EMS to EAMC Opelika following the incident.
Grant was pronounced deceased at 9:34 P.M. following unsuccessful resuscitations by fire and medical personnel.
Police say detectives responded and processed the scene, where they were able to collect evidence from the shooting. At this time, it appears that after the victim was shot, she attempted to drive away and struck another vehicle.
Detectives are currently pursuing additional leads and obtaining statements from witnesses. Grant will be transported to ADFS Montgomery Medical for a postmortem exam by the Lee County Coroner’s Office.
