Original story: A woman was fatally shot by deputies with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office on Monday night following a tense standoff at a home, authorities confirmed.
At approximately 9:09 PM on June 30, Troup County 911 received a call from an adult female at a residence in the 200 block of Mountain Laurel Drive. According to officials, the caller was threatening to take her own life and made additional threats to harm anyone who entered her home.
Sheriff’s deputies, along with personnel from Troup County AMR, were dispatched to the area. Emergency medical crews were staged nearby in case they were needed.
Upon arrival, deputies attempted to make contact with the woman using loud verbal commands and by having 911 operators call her directly. While the woman reportedly spoke with dispatchers multiple times, she repeatedly hung up, and deputies were unable to establish direct communication with her at the scene.
The situation continued for over 30 minutes before escalating shortly after 10:00 PM. Authorities say the woman opened the front door and pointed a handgun directly at the deputies. In response, deputies fired at the woman, who collapsed just inside the home.
Deputies immediately summoned medical assistance and began life-saving efforts, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has launched an independent investigation into the shooting, which is standard protocol in such incidents. CNAW2News.com has reached out to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Public Affairs Office, and has confirmed they are investigating an officer involved shooting.
The deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
