GSP: High speed chase ends in crash; driver injured
A high-speed pursuit ended in a serious crash early Sunday morning, sending one man to the hospital after his vehicle struck a tree in south Columbus.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident began around 2:47 a.m. on Sunday, August 3, 2025, when a state trooper conducting speed enforcement on Interstate 185 southbound near Mile Marker 7 observed an Infiniti sedan traveling at a high rate of speed. When the trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop by activating his emergency lights, the driver failed to yield, prompting a pursuit.
The suspect exited the interstate and led authorities through various surface streets before veering off the roadway near the intersection of Steam Mill Road and Pinecrest Drive. The vehicle collided head-on with a tree and came to a stop.
The trooper approached the scene to initiate a felony stop, but upon assessing the situation, determined the driver was seriously injured and required immediate medical attention. The trooper extracted the driver from the vehicle and called for emergency medical services.
EMS responded and transported the driver to a local hospital. The extent of the driver’s injuries has not been disclosed, and the identity of the individual has not yet been released.
The Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.
