PCPD releases update in fatality crash on Fontaine Road
Phenix City police have released an update regarding a fatality crash that occurred earlier this week.
According to police, the incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on August 18, when an officer on routine patrol near Seale Road and 4th Place observed two vehicles driving at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner. The vehicles turned off of 4th Place heading south before splitting off in different directions as the officer attempted a traffic stop.
The officer pursued a red Dodge Challenger, which accelerated in an attempt to flee. While traveling south on Fontaine Road, the officer later located the vehicle off the roadway, crashed on the east side of the street.
A witness at the scene told police that they saw the two vehicles racing shortly before the officer encountered them. Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says the driver of the red Dodge Challenger, identified as Trevor L. Woods, was pronounced deceased on scene.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is now leading the investigation into the crash. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
