Authorities investigating after inmate found deceased by Lee County corrections officials
An investigation is underway after an inmate was found deceased at the Lee County Detention Center.
Lee County sheriff’s officials confirm the inmate, identified as 47-year-old Aaron Dwight Johnson, was found lying deceased on the floor of his assigned cell on August 31, 2025, at 9:08 PM CDT, by Lee County Corrections Deputies.
Authorities say initial indications are that Johnson may have suffered some type of medical issue and there were no signs of foul play observed at the time.
“As standard procedure, the Russell County Sheriff’s Office was called to conduct an independent investigation of the inmate’s [Johnson’s] death,” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.
Johnson has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for a postmortem examination. “Once completed, the investigation results will be submitted to the Lee County District Attorney for presentation to a grand jury,” authorities added.
The investigation remains ongoing.
