Newborn baby found in Columbus dumpster currently receiving treatment at Piedmont’s PICU
Columbus police have released new details after a newborn baby was discovered inside of a dumpster.
The discovery was made around 6:30 P.M. on September 2, 2025, when authorities located a newborn baby boy inside of a dumpster behind the Budgetel in the 3100 block of Victory Drive.
Police confirm the baby boy was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he remains in the PICU. Our Special Victims Unit is handling the investigation.
Georgia law provides a safe, legal way for a newborn up to 30 days old to be surrendered safely and anonymously. Under the Safe Place for Newborns Act, a parent may leave their baby with staff at a hospital, police station, or fire station-no identification required and no criminal charges.
“A dumpster is not a safe haven,” authorities said. “This law exists to prevent tragedies like this and to protect both infants and parents in crisis.”
Police stated they are working closely with DFCS to ensure the child’s safety and determine next steps for care.
This is a developing story.
