Lee County Deputies rescue teen from house fire in Beauregard
A teenage girl is recovering after being rescued by two Lee County Sheriff’s deputies from a burning home Monday afternoon in the Beauregard community.
At approximately 4:09 p.m. CDT, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call reporting a structure fire on Lee Road 41. The caller told dispatchers that they had briefly stepped away from the kitchen to use the restroom while cooking and returned to find the room engulfed in flames.
Deputies Brightwell and Kennedy were the first to respond. Upon arrival, they encountered heavy smoke pouring from the residence. Without hesitation, the deputies entered the home, crouching low to navigate through thick smoke as they conducted a room-to-room search for anyone inside.
During their sweep, the deputies discovered a 16-year-old girl lying unconscious on the floor, apparently overcome by smoke inhalation. Battling intense smoke conditions, they pulled the teenager to safety and administered aid in the front yard until EMS arrived.
Once the teen was safe, the deputies continued their search to ensure no other individuals remained inside the home.
The Beauregard Volunteer Fire Department arrived shortly after and quickly extinguished the fire, which caused damage to the home’s kitchen floor and wall. Firefighters also worked to ventilate the house and prevent further smoke damage.
EMS personnel at the scene reported the girl was conscious but unresponsive, showing signs consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning. She was transported to a local hospital and has since been released.
Sheriff Jay Jones praised the deputies’ bravery and swift action.
“The actions of these deputies are yet another example of the type of men and women who are the Lee County Sheriff’s Office — selfless response to emergency situations resulting in the saving of the life of another,” Jones said. “The same level of courage and care is often displayed by our city police agencies, full-time and volunteer fire departments, EMS services, and our EMA in their efforts to serve Lee County citizens.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials say it appears to have started in the kitchen. No other injuries were reported.
