Mayor: Young man shot, killed in Lanett officer-involved shooting
The Mayor of Lanett is addressing the community after a young man was shot and killed during an encounter with Lanett police officers on Sunday.
In an official statement, Mayor Jamie Heard expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
“Yesterday, our city experienced a tragic incident involving a young man who was shot and killed following an encounter with Lanett police officers,” Heard said. “First and most importantly, on behalf of the City of Lanett, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this loss. Regardless of the circumstances, a life was lost, and our community is hurting.”
The mayor acknowledged that many residents are demanding answers but added that the city is following standard protocol by requesting an independent investigation led by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
“As a standard procedure, ALEA has been asked to conduct a full and independent investigation,” Heard said. “We will fully cooperate and allow the facts to be gathered without interference or speculation.”
Heard urged the community to remain calm while investigators work to determine what happened.
“During this process, I ask the community to remain calm, patient, and respectful,” he said. “I understand the emotions surrounding this tragedy, and we are committed to transparency. When verified information becomes available, we will share it with the public.”
The mayor also stressed the city’s ongoing commitment to public safety and unity, by saying that both residents and officers are impacted by the loss.
“Our goal is always to protect every member of our city, residents, and officers alike, and to work every day toward a safer and more united Lanett,” he said. “I am asking for your prayers for the family of the young man, for the officers involved, who are also affected by this tragedy, and for our entire city as we grieve and move forward together.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigations.
The name of the young man and additional details surrounding the encounter have not yet been released as the investigation continues.
This is a developing story.
