Columbus Fire & EMS launches virtual ER option for non-emergency 911 callers
Columbus Fire & EMS is rolling out a new telehealth option that allows non-emergency 911 callers to connect instantly with a board-certified ER doctor and patient navigator.
Officials say the program benefits both residents and the city’s emergency system. Callers can receive faster care, lower out-of-pocket expenses, and personalized follow-up support, while ambulances and ERs stay available for life-threatening emergencies.
“CFEMS wants patients to receive the right care at the right time,” said Deputy Chief Jules Hazen. “With RightSite, citizens get real-time guidance from an ER physician and avoid unnecessary ER visits.”
The Columbus 911 Center, operated by the Columbus Police Department, will help determine which calls qualify. When a situation doesn’t require lights and sirens, dispatchers can now ask, “Would you like to see an ER doctor right now?”
“This upgrade reflects our commitment to innovation and the well-being of our citizens,” said 911 Director Tracie Abell. “Integrating telehealth into 911 operations improves outcomes, strengthens our emergency response, and ensures the highest level of care for every caller.”
RightSite Health, partnering with agencies nationwide, is powering the service. “Our goal is to bring ER-level care straight to patients’ homes and connect them with the resources they need,” said CEO Jamo Rubin, MD.
