Auburn University alumnus among six killed in Air Force aircraft crash in Iraq
The Auburn University community is mourning the loss of alumnus Major John “Alex” Klinner, who was among six U.S. Air Force crew members killed when a KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed in Iraq.
Major Klinner graduated from Auburn University in 2016 with a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduating, he went on to serve in the United States Air Force, dedicating his career to supporting military operations and protecting the nation.
The aircraft involved in the crash was a KC-135 Stratotanker, a military refueling plane used to extend the range and endurance of U.S. and allied aircraft during missions. Details surrounding the cause of the crash have not yet been fully released.
In a statement, Auburn University expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its alumnus and honored his service.
“Major Klinner’s commitment to serving our nation reflects the courage, character and sense of duty demonstrated by those who choose a life of service,” the university said. “As we honor his life and legacy, we are reminded of Auburn’s long tradition of alumni who dedicate themselves to protecting and serving others through the armed forces.”
University leaders also extended condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
“On behalf of the Auburn Family, we extend our deepest condolences to Major Klinner’s family, fellow service members and all who knew and loved him,” the statement said. “We honor his sacrifice and remain grateful for his service to our nation.”
Major Klinner is remembered not only as a dedicated service member but also as part of the Auburn community’s long legacy of graduates who answer the call to serve in the armed forces.
