Man injured after shooting himself during traffic stop in Troup County
A man was seriously injured Tuesday morning after shooting himself during a traffic stop, according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the incident occurred around 8:05 a.m. on April 28 at the intersection of Hamilton Road and Old Chipley Road. A deputy had initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle when, before the deputy could exit his patrol car, the driver discharged a firearm, striking himself in the jaw.
Officials say the vehicle then began to roll before coming to a stop on the side of the roadway.
Deputies and emergency responders immediately rendered aid to the adult male at the scene. He was later transported by helicopter to a hospital in the Columbus area for treatment. His current condition has not been released.
The incident remains under active investigation.
