Man arrested after kidnapping, armed robbery incident in LaGrange
From LaGrange Police Dept. Press Release:
On May 7, 2023, at 4:20 A.M., Marquavious Brooks and Deatrice Rutledge drove to the Lagrange Police Department to report an incident.
Marquavious Brooks stated that he was at a house on Snelson Street and was preparing to drive away when Justin Deshun Cameron, uninvitedly, got into the driver side rear seat of Brooks’ vehicle.
Brooks stated that Cameron told him that “If you knew what was good for you, you would drive”. Brooks drove away from the location. While they were driving, Cameron told Brooks to take him to the location of Deatrice Rutledge, Cameron’s ex-girlfriend.
Brooks stated that he knew that Deatrice Rutledge was afraid of Cameron due to a previous Aggravated Assault, False Imprisonment incident for which Cameron was convicted and sent to prison, and he refused to take Cameron to the location. Cameron then demanded that Brooks call Rutledge. Brooks stated that he called Rutledge and that Cameron took the phone from him. Cameron then made several threats to kill Rutledge and then demanded money in exchange for releasing Brooks.
Rutledge advised that she sent $200.00 to Cameron’s CashApp account.
Brooks stated after Cameron received the money that he (Cameron) demanded to be brought back to his vehicle on Snelson Street. Brooks stated that he drove Cameron around for about 30 minutes, and during this time he reasonably believed that Cameron had a handgun or other weapon.
Justin Deshun Cameron was arrested at his residence later that morning. He was charged with: Kidnapping; Strong Arm Robbery; and Two counts of Terroristic Threats (Felony).
