Columbus police address ongoing issues with unsupervised minors in Uptown areas
The Columbus Police Department says it is increasing enforcement efforts following ongoing issues involving groups of unsupervised minors gathering in Uptown Columbus and other business areas during evening hours.
According to a statement released by the department, officers and business owners have reported repeated incidents involving disruptive behavior, trespassing, fights, and disturbances fueled by social media activity inside local businesses. In several cases, businesses were forced to close early because of the disruptions.
Police emphasized that while many young people are enjoying their summer break responsibly, the behavior seen in recent weeks “will not be tolerated.”
“These ongoing incidents affect employees, customers, families, and local businesses working hard to serve the community,” the department said in the release.
Officials noted that many businesses operating during late evening hours are not intended for unsupervised minors. Parents and guardians are being urged to closely monitor where their children are, who they are with, and to avoid dropping them off in entertainment districts without supervision.
The department also warned that disturbances involving large groups of juveniles can quickly escalate into more serious incidents, making early intervention and parental involvement critical.
Columbus Police say officers will continue working closely with business owners and increasing patrol presence in impacted areas across the city. Individuals involved in criminal activity or disruptive behavior could face charges, and parents or guardians may also be held accountable under local and state laws when appropriate.
“We want everyone to enjoy their summer safely and responsibly,” the department stated. “Columbus should remain a place where residents and visitors feel comfortable supporting local businesses and spending time with family and friends.”
The statement comes as businesses in Uptown and surrounding entertainment areas prepare for increased summer crowds and activity.
