Sheriff’s Office lieutenant named First Friday Hero® for leading safe evacuation of 500 inmates during jail fire
A Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant is being recognized for his actions during a June emergency at the Muscogee County Jail that resulted in the evacuation of approximately 500 inmates. Piedmont Columbus Regional has named Lt. Ray Thornton the organization’s First Friday Hero® for September, recognizing his response to a jail fire that officials say could have resulted in a much more devastating outcome. On June 16, an inmate started a fire inside the ventilation system at the Muscogee County Jail. According to officials, heavy smoke filled entire cellblocks in less than three minutes, creating an immediate life-threatening situation. Thornton made a critical command decision to begin evacuating inmates from the affected areas. With the assistance of Squad 3, approximately 500 inmates were evacuated from the facility. The evacuation included maximum-security inmates, gang-affiliated inmates, inmates with serious health concerns, disciplinary inmates and others considered high-risk classifications. Despite the challenging conditions, officials said Thornton and Squad 3 remained calm and worked together to safely move the inmates. “I am beyond proud of the bravery and professionalism displayed by Lt. Thornton and Squad 3,” Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman said. “They remained calm under intense pressure, worked together seamlessly and ensured there was no loss of life or escape.” #videojs6a9b06d93df5b { max-width:1280px; } Countryman said Thornton’s immediate actions during the emergency prevented the situation from becoming even more serious. “Were it not for Lt. Thornton’s immediate action during an incredibly challenging emergency, the night could have had a more devastating outcome,” Countryman said. A ceremony honoring Thornton with hospital leadership is scheduled for September 8 at 10 a.m. at the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office. Thornton’s story is also being featured throughout Piedmont Columbus Regional on commemorative posters and across the hospital’s social media platforms. “Their line of work is often a thankless job, and we want to make the community aware of what our local heroes do to make the Chattahoochee Valley a safer place,” said Piedmont Columbus Regional CEO Scott Hill. The First Friday Hero® recognition highlights local individuals whose actions demonstrate courage, service and a commitment to helping others throughout the Chattahoochee Valley!
