City manager recommends new community reinvestment director for council approval
Columbus City Manager Tyson Begly has selected Kimberly Mitchell to serve as the city’s next Community Reinvestment Director, pending approval by Columbus Council.
Begly is expected to bring Mitchell’s appointment before Columbus Council for consideration during the council’s next scheduled business meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Mitchell currently serves as Assistant Director of the Community Reinvestment and Real Estate Department, a position she has held since August 2022. She is an urban planner with nine years of experience working in or with local governments.
According to the city, Mitchell’s approach to planning emphasizes creating sustainable systems through research and data while also listening and responding to community needs.
In her current position, Mitchell assists with managing the Community Reinvestment and Real Estate Department and its employees. Her responsibilities include monitoring departmental projects and budgets and coordinating programs and activities involving federal and state funding, community development, housing, real estate and planning. Her previous experience includes serving as a Senior Planner with Mosaic Community Planning and as a Junior City Planner with the City of Fairburn.
Mitchell is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Tufts University and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Begly said Mitchell’s experience in local government planning, community development, housing programs and grant-funded initiatives provides a strong foundation for her transition into the Community Reinvestment Director position.
She comes highly recommended by Begly’s selection committee, which includes Deputy City Managers Lisa Goodwin and Pam Hodge, Finance Director Angelica Alexander and Human Resources Director Ola Terrell.
“I am truly excited about the opportunity to serve the citizens of Columbus in this new role,” Mitchell said. “I look forward to working alongside our community, City leadership, and our dedicated team to help address some of the critical needs of our neighborhoods.”
“Columbus is a community I am proud to serve, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue this important work,” she said.
Mitchell is originally from Union City, Georgia. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, gardening and spending time with her Labrador, Kendi.
If approved by Columbus Council, Mitchell will become the city’s Community Reinvestment Director.
