Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office awarded $118,000 grant for local DUI and aggressive driving enforcement
The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $118,000 Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.) grant through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).
According to GOHS, the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office is one of 32 law enforcement agencies across Georgia selected to receive a H.E.A.T. grant for Federal Fiscal Year 2026. The grant period runs from October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026.
The $118,000 award will allow the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office H.E.A.T. Unit to develop and implement strategies aimed at reducing traffic crashes caused by aggressive and dangerous driving behaviors.
The H.E.A.T. program focuses on combating crashes, injuries and fatalities associated with impaired driving and speeding. The program also works to increase seat belt use and educate the public about traffic safety and the dangers of driving under the influence.
“Crash data shows enforcement and education of traffic laws are two of the most effective countermeasures to help our state and nation reduce crashes and eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” said Allen Poole, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “Each life saved on our roads is one less family that will have to live with the pain of losing a loved one whose life was taken from them in a traffic crash that was preventable.”
GOHS said H.E.A.T. grants fund specialized traffic enforcement units in counties throughout Georgia. The program is designed to assist jurisdictions with the highest rates of traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities, with grant awards based on impaired driving and speeding data.
“The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office will continue its efforts to address traffic enforcement against aggressive drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. We have too many innocent lives being lost for these reasons,” said Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman.
As part of the effort, the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over DUI campaign and the Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign. The office will also conduct mobilizations throughout the year in coordination with GOHS’s high-visibility patrols, multi-jurisdictional road checks and sobriety checkpoints.
