High speed chase ends on Hwy. 280 in Smiths Station; driver transported to hospital
A man remains hospitalized tonight after suffering from medical complications at the end of a high speed chase in Lee County.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says the incident began around 7 P.M. central standard time on Thursday, December 21, 2023 after officials received a call reporting a vehicle swerving in and out of traffic lanes on US Highway 280 southeast of Opelika near Lee Road 251.
Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop when the driver accelerated away.
The pursuit began and entered Russell County. That is when Phenix City police, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, and ALEA units engaged in the pursuit.
The eluding vehicle returned to US Highway 280 and proceeded west to a location where Lee Road 249 intersects US Highway 280 in the Bleecker community.
”Spike strips were deployed and the vehicle came to stop,” Sheriff Jay Jones said. The adult male driver of the eluding vehicle went into medical distress and was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional in unknown condition.
The investigation is continuing. This remains a developing story.
