18-hour standoff ends at Park Place Apartments in Columbus
A hectic standoff has ended nearly 18 hours later since a 911 call was made.
The events began shortly around 11:00PM on March 23rd when patrol officers responded to a domestic involved incident happening inside of an apartment at Park Place Apartments involving one male and one female.
According to the female’s son, the man held the female hostage inside. Police Chief Freddie Blackmon confirmed just that.
Patrol officers to tactical teams set up positions surrounding the apartment causing residents that live inside to evacuate the building leaving many displaced for 18-hours.
The son, identified himself as Brandon but didn’t announce his last name, told News 2, “It clicked to me when officers were working that I have access to security cameras inside the apartment that he recently put in.” Officers were able to gain access to the video feed and see what exactly is going on inside. “All I saw was a man pointing a gun at my momma,” he said. The suspect, who is reportedly named Jeff, then realized that the cameras were moving and disconnected the cameras, according to Brandon.
That is when – Police Chief Freddie Blackmon and Assistant Police Chief Debra Kennedy – arrived on scene, along with the Crisis Negotiators, SWAT team, Special Ops, and more units arrived. An EMS Care ambulance was staged on 18th Avenue.
About 12 hours later, which was 11:30AM, the female hostage was rescued and was uninjured. The female, who was very traumatized, was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional where she remains in stable condition and is receiving proper medical treatment due to the emotional pain.
After that, the quiet returned with barely any movement from authorities except for the Incident Command bus showing up.
At about 5:45 PM, action picked up and law enforcement officials took the suspect into police-custody. Chief Freddie Blackmon made sure to thank everyone out on the scene and the dispatchers who answered the call.
After the presser, the scene quieted down leaving crime tape no longer hanging and nearby streets open. CSI is now on scene working the crime scene and taking pictures and bagging possible evidence.
Blackmon confirmed a more-detailed press release will be sent out to local outlets. No other details have been confirmed.
