Man found deceased, others rescued from Chattahoochee River today
A day of fishing on the rocks of the Chattahoochee River ended tragic when a man accidentally drowned and others were rescued by officials.
The ordeal began around 4:30 P.M. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, when, according to bystanders, the dam released water and the water level rose, while fishermen were on the rocks. As the water rose, one fisherman was swept away by the water, while others were stuck on rocks or going in after the missing fisherman.
Numerous agencies from both Columbus and Phenix City responded and rescued at least two people, possibly more, from the water, according to Columbus Fire and EMS Division Chief John Shull. Three watercraft were placed in the water and the search for the missing fisherman began.
Shortly before 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, officials pulled the missing fisherman from the river and was pronounced deceased at 8:12 P.M. Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan identified the fisherman as 28-year-old Bishop Davis of Dallas, Georgia. Family was notified on scene.
We send our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Bishop Davis, as well as the witnesses to the incident and the first responders involved.
