Freak accident involving rock slide underneath Columbus overpass leaves one dead
A developing scene is unfolding at this hour underneath JR Allen Parkway in an area known as “Tent City” for the homeless population after a person was found deceased underneath a boulder and rocks.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirms the death is from a very freak accident where the person is trapped under a large boulder due to a rock slide because of the heavy rains Columbus has been experiencing.
The name, sex, and age has not been determined at this time, according to Bryan.
Crews from Columbus Fire and EMS are working to remove the deceased from beneath the boulder and rocks.
“This will be a huge undertaking with the firefighters currently working to remove the body beneath the huge boulders,” Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan added. “It is a very dangerous undertaking and will take hours to unfold.”
Once the deceased person is recovered from the rocks, they will be taken to GBI in Decatur, Georgia for an autopsy. This remains a developing story.
