DONATE LIFE! Click here for quick facts and how you can become a donor today:
LifeLink, a non-profit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of lifesaving and life-enhancing organs and tissue for transplantation therapy, has been celebrating the month of April as Donate Life month.
As April ends, CNAW2News.com, along with Harris County Coroner Joe Weldon, want to let the community know how they can register to become a donor, as well as educate viewers on the LifeLink process.
In Georgia, LifeLink serves the entire state, as well as two counties in South Carolina, representing a population of > 10.5 million and nearly 200 hospital partners. A total of over 103,000 people, including children, are waiting for an organ transplant, with 4,700 of those living in Georgia.
Organs & tissues that can be recovered for transplant include the kidneys, liver, heart, pancreas, lungs, small intestine, bone, tendons, heart valves, skin and corneas. One organ & tissue donor can potentially benefit more than 75 individuals.
Harris County Coroner Joe Weldon says he has been at critical times with families too many times in his career. “The times that I am aware of where the donation was given has helped the healing and grieving process,” Weldon added.
