CAUGHT ON BODYCAM: Columbus Police Officer saves woman from burning home
In a daring act of bravery, Officer Michael Coley of the Columbus Police Department rescued an 89-year-old woman from a burning house in the early hours of May 10, 2024.
Around 12:44 a.m., Officer Coley was patrolling the area of Veterans Parkway and Hancock Road when he noticed smoke in the distance. Following his instincts, he traced the source to a residence engulfed in flames on Waterhill Road.
Without hesitation, Officer Coley alerted dispatch and immediately sprang into action, knocking on the door and windows to alert any occupants inside the smoke-filled home. Neighbors informed him that an elderly woman lived alone in the residence.
As the fire escalated rapidly and firefighters were still en route, the courageous officer made the split-second decision to enter the burning building with the assistance of other officers. He located the 89-year-old woman asleep in her bedroom at the rear of the house and escorted her to safety.
“Upon the arrival of the Columbus Fire Department and EMS, Officer Coley and his colleagues assisted firefighters by pulling hoses from the trucks, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to community safety,” the police department said. “Officer Coley’s quick thinking, bravery, and dedication exemplifies the highest standard of law enforcement. His heroic actions serve as a shining example of the Columbus Police Department’s unwavering duty to protect and serve the citizens of Columbus.”
