Custodian indicted, arrested for distributing obscene material to students at Sanford Middle School
A now-former Lee County Schools custodian has posted bond after being indicted, and arrested following an obscene material investigation.
The investigation began on November 7th, 2023, when Lee County Sheriff’s School Resource Officers received two disturbing reports involving a custodian at Sanford Middle School in the Beauregard community of Lee County.
“The custodian, identified as Joseph L. Walker Jr., 32, from Opelika, was accused of making sexual comments and showing inappropriate sexual photos to students,” investigators said.
Upon receiving the reports, Lee County Investigators were promptly notified and were able to confirm the allegations. School officials acted swiftly, placing Walker on administrative leave immediately. Walker resigned shortly thereafter, before the school board could convene to discuss the allegations further.
The case was subsequently presented to a Lee County Grand Jury in July of 2024. Walker was indicted on two counts of distributing obscene material to a student, a Class A misdemeanor.
Walker was arrested at his residence in the 7000 block of Hurst Street in Opelika on August 2, 2024, and transported to the Lee County Jail. He has since posted a $600 bond and is now awaiting court proceedings.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651.
